MSU Biology Graduate Student Association

The Biology Graduate Student Association (BGSA) serves as a representative body for graduate students in the Department of Biological Sciences at Mississippi State University (MSU). As a representative body, the BGSA seeks to

  • promote the common interests of all graduate student members
  • facilitate communication between members and departmental/university administration
  • increase awareness of graduate student and departmental research
  • foster closer relationships among new and current graduate students

The BGSA is especially active in planning events for MSU’s annual Darwin Week celebration and fundraising to bring prominent seminar speakers to the MSU campus. The BGSA also encourages cross-disciplinary approaches to science, and is currently in the process of establishing journal clubs with other biology-based departments including Wildlife, Fisheries, and Aquaculture, as well as Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology, and Plant Pathology. All graduate students are automatically granted full BGSA membership upon admission to the Department of Biological Sciences, and members are encouraged to attend the monthly meetings.

Please contact BGSA President Tyler Schartel (tes164@msstate.edu), Vice President Giuliano Colosimo (gc460@msstate.edu), or Treasurer Cory Shoemaker (cs1702@msstate.edu) if you have any questions about this organization.
